Wavelength

Last night I went to Joanna Haigood’s Zaccho Dance Theatre 45th Anniversary Celebration. Joanna has been my mentor since 2005, and I hadn’t seen one of her performances in a while. Walking into that room, I was reconnecting—not just with a community, but with a stretch of my own creative lineage.

What struck me immediately was how clear it was who was on my wavelength and who wasn’t.

Some people genuinely missed me. I could feel it. These weren’t necessarily the people who know me best or with whom I’ve spent the most time. But for whatever reason, we resonate. We get each other. We appreciate what the other does. There is a shared frequency.

And then there were others—people I’ve spent real time with—where… nothing. If I didn’t actively project energy, enthusiasm, or warmth, the interaction just sat there, inert. The contrast was almost startling. Some connections hum. Others don’t. The difference was undeniable.

The people whose vibration harmonizes with mine - we are drawn to each other. Conversation flows without effort. Curiosity is genuine. Possibility expands. With others, the frequencies don’t match, and nothing blends. It is awkward.

There is no deeper meaning here, except that it is useful information for navigating the world.

Go towards the ones that resonate - invite them to tea, spend time with them, even if there isn’t a clear reason why. Trust that the resonance will reveal something useful. Let go of the ones that don’t resonate. Don’t consider why or worry about why not. It just isn’t.

Follow the resonance. It’s one of the most reliable compasses we have.
