Confidence is a Commodity

Confidence is a commodity. We don’t always have it. When we have it, we can spend it on something that will render returns and more sources of confidence.

Practice can lead to confidence. I know if I swim regularly, I will become stronger and then I can spend that confidence on motivating myself to go more often.

Sometimes it's worth doing things for low pay just because they will give you more confidence. Will doing this project give you the confidence to push harder in the same direction with more financial reward?

Confidence comes the moment after a win. Don’t sit on it. Use it wisely. One win can lead to the next if you spend that commodity intentionally. Use it to take risks - to reach out in risky ways, to promote yourself, to form new alliances.

All of these things only work when backed by confidence.

How are you going to spend it when you get some confidence again?

I taught a circus workshop for a week in Canada. It went well. Teaching my workshops every day for a week increased my confidence in my teaching because I could see how it worked for the students. I could see them growing, evolving, and having moments of insight.

I spent that confidence reaching out to a university I had been in touch with months ago about teaching a series of workshops.

Technically, there was no reason to wait for this workshop to complete before reaching out to the university, but with the resource of confidence, it was easier to reach out, and my contact was stronger. I had the conviction that my offering would be valuable to them.
